You’re passionate about something! You’ve argued with strangers on social media and you’ve purchased t shirts and marched. Now what?
I got stuck here too. As an educator, my heart will always be for children. Even as a public school teacher, I found myself in “show downs” with higher ups that did not want to provide fair treatment for my students. This aggressiveness at some point turned to bitterness. I found myself being blinded by my anger and it was off putting. People in charge did not want to listen to me. Why would they? I was full of rage and could not have a civil discussion about any of my concerns with them. I ultimately left teaching, knowing there had to be a better way to help the kids in my area.
I started my own company, but was still leading from a place of bitterness. I wanted to shine light on what they were doing. I wanted to prove everyone that they were wrong and I was right. However, I spent my energy in a losing battle. I had to admit defeat, but just with this battle.
After some deep soul searching, I realized I had much more power than I could have imagined. I didn’t need to bother getting a specific organization or admit they were wrong. I didn’t need to focus on getting certain people fired or exposed. I was wasting my time and frankly, I don’t like the person had I had become.
It was about a year ago, I started to take actions that were in my realm of control. I started finding leadership who would listen. I found opportunities to volunteer and serve my community, which lead to more opportunities. I decided to move from a place of bitterness and hurt to a place of change. It was no longer about proving someone else wrong or “winning”, it was about finding steps I could take to move to real change in my areas.
A year later and I serve on city committees and am very active in helping vulnerable populations get care they need during this COVID-19 crisis. I created this tool, “Finding Your Power” to give you a clear 30 Day (or piece) plan to get you from beyond the anger and onto real action for change. Each day includes a direct action towards becoming an expert and advocate for your cause in your area!
It can be easy to get overwhelmed with all of the work that needs to be done with saving the planet, or our children, or ending hunger— but we just take one bite at a time. These problems didn’t happen overnight and they will not be solved that quickly either. It will take just regular people, like you and me, taking small steps for big change.
In 30 days, we go from arguing with trolls on the internet to taking action for a cause!
