I'm Dr. Amy Heger--award winning educator and entrepreneur. I got my start in the alternative school setting at a residential placement in 2006.
Having those experiences early truly formed my opinions and methods surrounding education. I had high school kids who couldn't read. I had 18 year old seniors who already had a felony on their record.
As my career progressed, so did my anger and frustration for how my kids were being treated, and how us teachers were being professionally disrespected by leaders. During the spring of 2018, I started my own company, including The Night Watch Childcare Center (my shirt lol) --an overnight childcare center. July 2019 marked the end of an era as a was able to quit my teaching job.
The decision to quit my teaching job was not an easy one. I had 2k a month in student loans headed my way once I completed my Ed.D. and I was becoming bored with my position. I loved the kids and the immediate staff I worked with, but my hands were tied when it came to really making an impact on these kids.
I also knew that if there was a teacher like me in my small area, that there were others dealing with the same issues. I knew my childcare center would provide me the professional and financial protection to speak frankly about issues going on schools without fear of repercussion from the powers-at-be.
With my childcare center, I have been able to work with local organizations to make some observable change. We participate in weekly events around out city to provide food, health screenings and childcare scholarship information.
